Northern Lights in Norway: Magic in the Sky
Leo travels to Norway to see the Northern Lights. He learns about the legends and magic surrounding this natural wonder.
Leo looked out of the car window in awe as they drove toward the small northern town of Tromsø. Everything around him was new and fascinating. He saw snowy mountains, majestic fjords, and frost-covered trees. Norway seemed like a real winter fairy tale to Leo. But he hadn’t come just for the beautiful scenery — today, he hoped to see the Northern Lights, the magic he had heard about back home. He couldn’t wait to witness the shimmering lights in the night sky with his own eyes.
When Leo arrived in Tromsø, he was greeted by a local boy named Erik. He had light hair, bright blue eyes, and a warm smile. Erik immediately asked if Leo had come to see the Northern Lights. Leo nodded eagerly, explaining that it was his biggest dream. Erik suggested they go to a lake outside the town, where the best view of the lights could be seen, and Leo happily agreed.
On the way to the lake, Erik told Leo that his family and many other locals believe in a special magic connected to the Northern Lights. “You know,” Erik began, “our ancestors believed that the Northern Lights were a sign of the spirits of our ancestors, who protect us and watch over the land.” Leo listened closely, imagining colorful lights appearing in the sky, hiding mysterious stories behind them. “Spirits of the ancestors? How interesting!” Leo said, picturing the light ribbons in the sky coming alive to protect the people.
When they arrived at the frozen lake, the sun was setting behind the mountains, and the dark sky, filled with stars, was ready to reveal its magic. Erik and Leo settled on a small hill with snow-covered pine trees and waited patiently. “Sometimes the lights show up right away, and sometimes you have to wait for hours,” Erik said. “They don’t always come, but when they do, it feels like a little miracle.” Leo took a deep breath and prepared to wait, watching the stars.
After a few minutes, Leo noticed faint greenish streaks in the sky, which began to grow brighter and seemed to dance. “Erik, look!” Leo shouted, pointing upward. Right before their eyes, the sky began to fill with bright, flowing lights that twisted and shimmered, growing brighter, then dimmer. It truly looked like magic.
Erik explained that the Northern Lights often change colors and shapes. “The lights aren’t always green,” he said. “Sometimes they can be pink, blue, purple, or even red. The colors depend on which particles collide high in the atmosphere.” Leo listened with interest, watching as the lights in the sky changed shades from green to bright blue and even purple. He felt like he was part of this cosmic dance.
As they sat watching the lights, Erik continued telling stories. “We have another legend,” he said. “They say that if someone makes a wish while looking at the Northern Lights, it will surely come true — as long as you believe with all your heart.” Inspired by Erik’s words, Leo closed his eyes and made his own wish. He dreamed of new adventures and seeing more magical places like this one.
After a while, Erik showed Leo some constellations he had known since childhood. They lay in the snow, pointing to different stars and formations. “That’s the Big Dipper, and over there is Orion,” explained Erik. “And far in the distance, if you look closely, you can see the North Star, which points north.” Leo was amazed by how much you could learn just by looking at the starry sky.
After a while, the lights in the sky began to fade, and a deep silence settled over the landscape. Leo sighed, feeling that he had just seen something that would stay with him forever. The Northern Lights were more than just light; they were something he couldn’t put into words. He felt as though he had become part of something ancient and grand, as if he had touched an old legend.
Later, on the way back to town, Leo thanked Erik for sharing the stories and showing him the wonder of the Northern Lights. “I don’t think I’ll ever forget this,” Leo said, looking up at the starry sky. “Now I believe that the Northern Lights are more than just light — they’re something greater.” Erik smiled and said, “Now you know one of our secrets. Everyone who sees the Northern Lights feels a little closer to nature and to this magic.”
That night, as Leo lay in bed, he couldn’t fall asleep, thinking of the lights in the sky and the quiet whisper of the wind. He had made his wish and hoped that one day he could return to Norway to see this magical display again. The Northern Lights had become for him not only a symbol of beauty but also of friendship born under the stars. It was one of those adventures that stay in your heart forever.
