The Magic Feathers – A German Fairy Tale About Kindness and Helping Others

Short Description:

The Magic Feathers is a German fairy tale about a boy who, with the help of magical feathers from a bird, learns to notice the needs of others and help people from the heart.

The boy finds the bird

In a small village surrounded by forests, lived a boy named Lukas. He was kind and loved walking in the forest, watching birds and animals. One day, on his way home, Lukas noticed something lying still by the road. Approaching, he saw a small bird. Its wing was broken, and it lay quietly in the grass. — You must be hurt, — said Lukas. — Don’t worry, I will help you. The boy gently picked up the bird and took it home. He made a soft nest for it from cloth, placed a bowl of water, and some breadcrumbs. Every day he cared for it, checking if its wing was healing.

After a few weeks, the bird grew stronger and started flapping its wings. Lukas knew it was time to set it free. He went to the edge of the forest and raised his hands. The bird flew up, but instead of flying away, it suddenly spoke: — Lukas, you saved my life. As a thank you, I want to give you a gift. The bird dropped three bright feathers. — These feathers are special. They will help you do good. But remember, their power is only activated when you truly want to help. With these words, the bird flew away.

The boy holds the magic feathers

Lukas stared at the feathers for a long time. He didn’t understand how they could be magical. But soon, he found an opportunity to test them. The next day, he saw an old man standing by the road, carrying a heavy sack of potatoes. — Would you like some help? — Lukas offered. — Thank you, but the sack is too heavy, — replied the old man. Lukas took one of the feathers, clenched it in his hand, and thought: — Let the sack become lighter. To the old man’s surprise, the sack really did become lighter, and Lukas easily carried it to the old man’s house. The old man thanked him, and the boy thought: — This really works! But I just wanted to help, not show magic.

From then on, Lukas always carried the feathers with him. He helped a boy whose kite got stuck in a tree, helped his neighbor collect berries that she had dropped. Every time he used a feather, he felt warmth spreading through his chest. But one day Lukas met a girl sitting on a stone, crying. — What happened? — he asked. — I lost my kitten, — she replied. Lukas thought for a moment and took the last feather. He squeezed it and wished for the girl to find her kitten. Within minutes, a little fluffy kitten appeared from the bushes. The girl hugged it and then thanked Lukas. — You are a real wizard! — she said.

When the feathers were all used up, Lukas felt sad at first. But then he realized that he could still help without them. He no longer needed the magical feathers because he had learned to notice who needed help and to truly want to do good. From then on, he became known as the helper of the village. And sometimes the bird would return, watching him from above, pleased that the boy had learned her lesson.
