The Skeleton Mort in the Old Town: A Magical Tale for Kids
A story about a skeleton named Mort, who lives in an old town and is friends with the townspeople. Discover how he helps the townsfolk and shares his kindness.
In an old European town, where the houses were built of stone and the streets were lit by old lanterns, there lived a friendly skeleton named Mort. Nobody knew exactly where he came from, but Mort was always kind-hearted and helped the townspeople, even though he was a bit mysterious.
During the day, Mort usually rested in the cozy basement of the old town hall, and at night, he quietly roamed the streets. He loved how the lantern light illuminated the streets and old buildings. He enjoyed watching the residents, who sometimes left him little gifts: candles, dried flowers, and even letters.
Mort always returned kindness with kindness: if someone lost an item, he secretly returned it, leaving it by their door. One evening, when a sudden rainstorm hit the town, he found a little girl lost near the fountain. Mort brought her home, and although the girl was initially a bit scared, she quickly realized he wasn’t frightening at all.
From that day on, the children became his best friends. They told wonderful stories about him and even tried to find him by playing on the town streets at night. But Mort was very careful and only appeared to those who truly needed his help.
Sometimes, Mort visited the old library, where ancient books were kept, to read about the history of his town. He dreamed of learning more about the former residents and those who had walked these streets centuries ago. The librarian, an old man with big glasses, knew about Mort but never revealed his secret. Instead, he always left the book open to the right page, as if inviting Mort to learn more.
One day, Mort found out that an autumn festival was coming to town, with a parade of old costumes. All the residents were preparing for the celebration, and the children even began sewing their own costumes. Mort also wanted to participate but worried that his “skeleton costume” might scare people. So he decided to do something special—he decorated himself with autumn leaves and little lanterns.
On the night of the festival, Mort quietly came to the square, where children and adults in various costumes were having fun. Everyone gasped when they saw Mort glowing with autumn leaves. The children gathered around him, laughing and asking how he had managed to make such a wonderful costume. Mort just smiled quietly, seeing how happy the townspeople were with his presence.
Since then, Mort became a legend in his town. Every year, the residents left candles and flowers at the fountain to thank him. And Mort continued to help everyone who needed it, remaining the good spirit of his old town.
