Fun Crafts
Ilya and his friend create crafts from natural materials for a school contest. At first, they strive for perfection but soon realize that the most important thing is to have fun and work together.
When Maria Petrovna announced a school contest for crafts made from natural materials, Ilya and his friend Nikita immediately got excited about joining. They already imagined themselves creating something unique and original. “Just wait, Nikita, we’ll have the coolest craft in school!” Ilya said enthusiastically as they discussed their ideas after class.
Their first ideas were very ambitious. Nikita suggested making a castle out of pinecones, and Ilya came up with the idea of a small cottage made of moss and acorns. They even wanted to add “inhabitants” — tiny creatures made from nutshells and pebbles. They imagined how their work would amaze everyone in class, and everyone would admire their creative approach.
After school, they headed to the nearby park to gather materials. Ilya and Nikita filled their backpacks with pinecones, twigs, moss, acorns, and dry leaves. On their way back, they discussed how best to use their collection. Ilya felt like a real sculptor, and Nikita — an architect, and together they were ready to create a masterpiece.
The next day, the friends brought their findings to school and began working during recess. They spread out the materials on the desk, and the work began. But soon it became clear that building a castle out of pinecones was much harder than they thought. The cones wouldn’t “stick” together, and the moss didn’t provide the stability they needed.
“Ilya, it’s not working out...” Nikita said, feeling a bit discouraged when the castle fell apart once again.
Ilya sighed but stayed optimistic:
“Don’t worry, Nikita. Maybe we should try something simpler? The important thing is to have fun ourselves!”
They decided to make a simpler yet fun composition: a forest with whimsical trees made of pinecones and leaves, along with “forest dwellers” made from acorns. Ilya created a tiny character with an acorn hat, and Nikita added a “house” made from twigs.
As they crafted, they laughed and imagined stories about how their little characters lived in their tiny forest. Time flew by, and by the end of the day, their piece was complete. It wasn’t a castle, but it was colorful and funny. They added a few extra details: small stones representing a path and a “pond” made from blue paper.
The next day, when Maria Petrovna invited all the participants to present their work, Ilya and Nikita proudly displayed their creation. Classmates gathered around to admire the little forest world they had made with everyday natural materials.
Many students smiled, looking at the funny “trees” and characters the friends had made. Someone even said, “These little guys are so cool!” Ilya felt that he and Nikita had done a great job, even though it wasn’t as complex as they had initially planned.
After class, Maria Petrovna came over to praise the friends:
“Well done, boys! I love how you created a story for your craft. It’s not just a project; it’s a whole world!”
Ilya and Nikita smiled. They realized that it wasn’t necessary to make something big and complicated to impress others. The key was to put their heart into it and enjoy the process.
Thus ended their first craft contest, and although they didn’t win a prize, Ilya and Nikita felt like winners. They made something they enjoyed and that made others smile as they looked at their work.
Ilya decided that he would definitely participate in the next contest because he understood how important it was to have fun doing something with friends. Now he and Nikita had a new shared hobby — making fun crafts from nature’s offerings.
