How to Make an Insect Trap

Children create an insect trap using glue and fruits, exploring nature and ecological processes. A simple and fun experiment for children to do outdoors.

How to Make an Insect Trap

Lena and Petya often spent time outdoors, exploring nature and learning about different animals and plants. Today, they decided to do something particularly interesting – create an insect trap. Lena had read in a book that insects are often attracted to sweet smells, and Petya was very curious about the idea of observing them up close. They decided to make a trap that would attract insects with sweet fruits.

Lena and Petya are preparing to make an insect trap

— Look, Petya, — said Lena, opening a book, — we can make an insect trap using simple materials like glue and fruits! This is not only fun but will also help us learn which insects live near us.

Petya was excited:

— Great! We can watch which insects get into our trap. Which fruits should we use?

Lena went to the garden to gather fruits. She picked bananas and apples, which had a sweet smell. Petya prepared the glue base, which was necessary to attach the fruits and other elements of the trap.

— We need to make sure the trap is not too complicated but still attractive enough for the insects, — said Lena, starting to prepare the fruits. — We’ll use an old box to build the trap. Inside, we’ll place the fruits, and outside, we’ll apply some glue so that insects can easily get inside.

Lena and Petya cut fruits for the insect trap

Petya happily helped Lena cut the fruits into small pieces. Once everything was ready, they carefully placed the fruits inside the box so that the insects could be attracted by the sweet smell. Lena then applied glue to the outside walls of the box so that the insects couldn’t escape but could easily get inside.

— Now we can put the trap in the garden, — said Petya, setting the box on the ground. — Let’s see how many different insects we can catch!

The kids set the trap under a tree so that the insects could get there using the scent of the fruits. After some time, they started noticing that various insects began to enter the trap. Lena and Petya observed this process, amazed by how many different types of insects were entering the trap.

— Look, these seem to be ants! — Lena exclaimed as she saw ants crawling into the box. — And here are some little grasshoppers! They probably really love the sweet fruits.

Petya observed the ants as they led each other to the food source:

— This is amazing! I didn’t think it would be so easy to catch insects. Now we can study them up close, and they won’t harm the plants in the garden since they’ll stay in the trap.

Lena suggested to Petya:

— Maybe we should try using different fruits in the trap? Let’s see which insects prefer them. Maybe citrus fruits will attract other insects!

Petya was excited by the new idea and immediately suggested:

— What if we add some honey? It will definitely attract bees and other insects that love sweets!

So, the kids began to change the composition of their trap, experimenting with various ingredients to see which insects would come. Lena and Petya noticed that different insects reacted differently to the fruits. Some preferred bananas, others apples, and some couldn’t resist the honey.

The kids experiment with different fruits in the insect trap

— This is a great experiment, — said Lena. — We’re not just making an insect trap, but also learning what they like. This will help us better understand which insects live in our garden!

Petya agreed:

— Yes, we can also try studying the behavior of these insects and learn how they help the plants in the garden. For example, ants often help in fighting pests!

The kids proudly watched their trap and how it attracted more and more insects. They decided to continue their experiments with traps and study how different insects interact with plants. It was not only a fun but also an educational experience that helped them understand nature better.
