How Vasya Found Perun — The Legend of Ancient Rus

A fairy tale about how Vasya embarked on a sacred mountain to retrieve Perun's hammer and learned that true strength lies in kindness and wisdom.

How Vasya Found Perun — The Legend of Ancient Rus

In a small village on the edge of the forest lived a boy named Vasya. He loved listening to the elders' stories about the great gods who protected the people. Vasya admired Perun, the god of thunder and lightning, the most. "He is the strongest!" he often told his friends. "If I had his hammer, I could protect our village."

One day, a troubling rumor reached the village: Perun's hammer had been stolen by an evil spirit from the underworld. Because of this, thunder stopped rolling across the sky, and people felt defenseless. Vasya couldn't stand by. "I will find the hammer and return it to Perun!" he said and set off on his journey.

Vasya sets off for the sacred mountain

The elder told Vasya that the hammer might be hidden on a sacred mountain that few dared to enter. Vasya took a piece of bread, some water, and set off. The road to the mountain was long and arduous. The surrounding forest was full of strange sounds and movements. Soon, a huge snake appeared before Vasya, guarding the entrance to the path. "You shall not pass," it hissed. "Unless you prove your courage."

Vasya did not retreat. "What must I do to proceed?" the snake thought and said, "Bring me berries from the highest branch of the oak tree. But be careful: the branches may break." Vasya climbed the oak despite his fear and gathered the ripest berries. When he handed them to the snake, it allowed him to pass.

On the path to the summit, Vasya faced a new trial. Ahead lay a wide stream of water that was impossible to jump over. In the water swam an old turtle that seemed to be waiting for something. "Boy," she said, "help me reach the shore, and I will help you cross the stream." Vasya lifted the turtle and carried her to the other side. In gratitude, she pointed out an underwater stone that he could use to cross.

At the mountain's peak, Vasya saw a large cave from which strange sounds emanated. Inside the cave, he discovered a spirit—big, dark, and formidable. Before him lay Perun's hammer. "Why have you come here, boy?" the spirit asked. Vasya bravely replied, "I want to return Perun's hammer so that he can protect our world again."

The spirit laughed, "You are just a child. Why should I give you such power?" Vasya thought for a moment and said, "Strength is not only for warriors and weapons. It lies in kindness that helps others and the courage to face challenges."

These words surprised the spirit. "You are right," he said. "Strength lies in kindness and wisdom. You have proven that you deserve the hammer." The spirit handed Vasya the hammer, which glowed with a bright light. In that moment, Vasya felt the thunder rumble above his head, and lightning illuminated the sky.

When Vasya returned to the village, he was greeted with joy. He raised the hammer to the sky, and thunder roared across the land once more. The next day, lightning appeared in the sky, and Perun himself stood before everyone. "You have proven that true strength is kindness and courage. I am proud of you," he said. Perun took back his hammer and gifted Vasya a golden amulet that protected the boy and his village.

Since then, Vasya became a hero of his village, and his story was passed down from generation to generation, reminding everyone that even the smallest heart can possess great strength.
