Little Birds on the Branch
A story about young birds preparing for their first flight and discovering what it means to be a bird.
In the shade of a tall tree, on the highest branch, sat a cozy bird’s nest. Inside lived a small family: a mother bird and her three chicks. Having just learned to hold steady on their feet, the chicks now spent every day observing the world around them and asking their mother dozens of questions. But one question especially fascinated them: “When will we learn to fly?”
The mother bird smiled and said, “Soon, little ones. But first, you need to learn to balance and understand how your wings work.” With these words, she spread her wings and showed them how they held her in the air. The chicks watched her with admiration, trying to mimic her movements, but their little wings didn’t yet obey them the way they wanted.
The next day, Mother Bird decided that it was time for their first small exercise. She suggested that each chick, one by one, come to the edge of the nest and try flapping its wings gently. The bravest chick eagerly stepped to the edge and fluttered its wings. It felt a light stream of air beneath its wings and was amazed as its little body lifted off the branch for a moment. “Wow, I almost flew!” it exclaimed, feeling a rush of excitement.
The second chick, seeing its sibling’s success, decided to try as well. It cautiously flapped its wings and, feeling the wind, could hardly hold back a happy squeal. Its wings began to move faster, and Mother Bird said, “Soon you’ll be flying freely, but first you need to strengthen your wings and learn to use them properly.”
On the third day, all three chicks, inspired by their early successes, practiced together. They learned that, to take off, they had to coordinate the movements of their wings and bodies. With each flap, they felt more confident, dreaming of the day when they could soar in the sky alongside their mother.
Seeing their progress, Mother Bird said, “Don’t rush, but know that each of you has the strength to fly. One day, you’ll spread your wings and fly far, far away, higher than the trees and rivers.” With those words, she took a short loop around the nest to show them what it would look like.
From that day on, the chicks eagerly awaited their flight practices, knowing that soon, very soon, they would spread their wings and take their first real flight. They learned to believe in their own strength, and the nest became their first “runway,” where they prepared for a new life full of adventures.
