Worms and Their Secret Work: A Lesson for the Lemur in the Forests of Madagascar
A lemur learns from a chameleon that tiny worms play an important role in nature by loosening the soil, and he gains respect for all creatures who care for the forest.
In the dense tropical forests of Madagascar, where green leaves form a continuous canopy overhead, lived a small lemur named Rico. Rico was cheerful and curious, but sometimes he lacked knowledge about how the world around him worked. He loved spending his days in the forest, leaping from branch to branch, yet he had little understanding of how nature operated.
One day, while walking along a forest trail after the rain, Rico noticed something unusual on the ground. The entire forest was fresh and damp, and the leaves and soil released a unique aroma. But his attention was drawn to tiny creatures slowly moving across the soil. They were small, pinkish worms that seemed very strange to him.
“What are these strange creatures?” Rico murmured, leaning in to get a better look at the worms. “What are they even here for? They’re so small and odd!”
As Rico watched the worms with a puzzled expression, his old friend, a chameleon named Charlie, approached him. Charlie was wise and knew a lot about life in the forest, as he loved observing everything around him and studying the habits of the forest’s inhabitants.
“Hello, Rico,” Charlie greeted him, noticing how interested Rico was in the soil. “What are you studying here?”
Rico pointed at the worms and replied, “I found these tiny creatures. They’re crawling around on the ground, but I don’t understand what they’re for. It seems like they just take up space and do nothing.”
Charlie smiled at his friend’s words. “Oh, Rico, you have no idea how important these little worms are for our forest. They may be small, but their work plays a huge role in sustaining life around us.”
Rico was surprised. “But how can they be useful? They’re so tiny and just crawl around on the ground!”
Charlie looked carefully at the worms and began explaining. “These worms actually help loosen the soil as they move. They dig tiny tunnels under the ground, which helps air and water penetrate the soil better. Thanks to them, plant roots get more oxygen and moisture, meaning that plants can grow healthy and strong.”
Rico listened closely, trying to grasp the importance of these little creatures. “So, they help trees and bushes grow?”
“Exactly,” Charlie nodded. “Without these worms, the soil would become compact, and plants would have a harder time growing. And plants give us food, air, and shade, so you could say these little worms help us all.”
The lemur was silent, contemplating what he had heard. Now he understood that even the smallest creatures in the forest played a role in maintaining its beauty and richness.
“It’s amazing how everything in the forest is connected,” Rico finally said. “I never thought such tiny creatures could be so important. But now I see that each of us helps nature in our own way.”
Charlie smiled. “Yes, Rico. Nature is designed so that every creature, whether a big tree or a tiny worm, contributes something. We are all part of a big system, and even the smallest contribution is important.”
Since then, Rico became more attentive to the forest and its inhabitants. He realized that even the smallest and most unnoticed creatures play their part in maintaining nature, and he learned to respect their work. Now, when he saw the worms, he no longer looked at them with confusion but remembered Charlie’s words and understood that they were just as important residents of the forest as he was.
This day became an important lesson for Rico: he learned that all creatures in the forest have their role, and each of them helps make the forest the place he loves. He felt that now he understood the forest better and could respect every corner and creature within it.
