Heart of the Volcano — A Hawaiian Fairy Tale About Saving the Island
A fairy tale about how children helped the goddess Pele find the magical heart of the volcano to stop an eruption and save the island's inhabitants.
On a distant Hawaiian island, amidst vibrant jungles and blue waves, stood a village at the foot of a majestic volcano. The islanders considered the volcano sacred, for within it dwelled the goddess Pele, the mistress of fire. But one day, the village's peace was disrupted: the ground trembled, and the volcano began to spew streams of lava. In panic, the people started gathering their belongings, preparing to flee.
Among the villagers were a brother and sister, Kai and Leia. They grew up listening to stories about Pele and her connection to the island. "We can't leave our home!" Leia declared. "Maybe we can do something," Kai agreed. Together, they decided to journey to the volcano to ask Pele to stop the eruption.
Climbing towards the crater, the children felt the air grow hot and the ground become cracked. When they reached the summit, Pele herself appeared before them. Her presence was majestic: her long hair shimmered like streams of fire, and her eyes sparkled like two volcanic craters.
"Why have you come here, children?" Pele asked. Leia bravely replied, "We want to save our village. Please, stop the eruption." Pele pondered: "An eruption cannot be simply stopped. The volcano is angry because its heart has been stolen. Find the magical heart of the volcano, and peace will return to the island."
"Where should we look?" Kai asked. Pele handed the children a red crystal that began to glow as they approached the right place. "This crystal will show you the way," she said. "But be careful: the path will be full of trials."
The first obstacle awaited them at the base of the volcano. The crystal began to shine brighter as the children approached the stone archway. But the archway was guarded by a massive stone spirit. "To proceed, you must solve my riddle," he said. "What is hot, yet does not burn? What is bright, yet does not blind?" Leia thought and said, "It is the sun." The stone spirit nodded and opened the passage.
Next, the crystal led them to a lava river. "How will we cross it?" Kai exclaimed. On the shore, they noticed magical stones floating over the lava. "We can use them as a bridge!" Leia suggested. Carefully, the children jumped from stone to stone until they reached the other side.
Finally, the crystal led them into a cave where the heart of the volcano lay — a bright red stone pulsing like a living being. But it was guarded by a lava serpent. "You will not take the heart unless you prove your valor," it said. Leia and Kai bravely approached the serpent. "We don't want to fight," Leia said. "We have come to save our home. Please, trust us."
The lava serpent pondered and then replied, "I see your pure hearts. Take it." It stepped back, allowing the children to take the magical stone.
When the children returned to Pele, she smiled: "You have proven that your people deserve to live on this island. The power of the volcano's heart will restore balance." She placed the stone into the crater, and the volcano instantly calmed. The ground stopped trembling, and the lava solidified.
"You have done a great deed," Pele said. "Now this island will be under my protection, and you will always be remembered as heroes." She gifted the children small fiery crystals that glowed in their hands. "These crystals will remind you of your courage and love for your home."
When Kai and Leia returned to the village, they were greeted by joyful villagers. The island became peaceful again, and the children never forgot their adventure and the lessons they learned from Pele.
