The Dragon and His Golden Treasure

A story about a dragon guarding his treasure in a cave and a brave knight who visits him. This dialogue-filled tale shows that even mighty dragons can be wise and just protectors of their treasure.

The Dragon and His Golden Treasure

Deep in the mountains, in a dark cave, lived a dragon named Faeron. Faeron was old and wise, and beneath his wings lay countless treasures of gold he had gathered over the centuries. One day, a young knight named Roland approached his cave.

“Who dares to approach my cave?” boomed the dragon’s deep voice.

Roland, unafraid, stepped forward and called out, “I am Sir Roland! I have come to learn about your treasure, which legends speak of far and wide.”

Faeron laughed, and the sound of his laughter echoed throughout the cave. “And what, do you think, will you steal my gold?”

“No, I am no thief!” — answered Roland confidently. “I came to ask why you guard it so carefully. Gold means nothing; it simply lies here.”

Knight Roland speaks with the dragon

The dragon looked closely at the knight. “Gold may be just metal, but it holds history and secrets of the past. Every bar is a trophy, every gem a memory. Do you understand that, Roland?”

Roland thought for a moment. “But aren’t you afraid that someday this treasure will fall into the wrong hands?”

Faeron sighed and shook his head. “Wisdom isn’t in the treasure itself, but in how one uses it. I don’t guard it for myself but so that it may one day serve those with worthy hearts. Maybe one day, someone will come who understands this and won’t take the gold for mere riches.”

Faeron explains his purpose

Roland nodded, respecting the dragon even more. “So, what can I do to show you that I’ve come with a pure heart?”

Faeron thought. “Answer me, Roland, what would you do with this gold if it were yours?”

Roland thought for a moment. “I would give it to those in need, help my kingdom, and build a home for my family.”

Faeron nodded. “Good intentions, Roland. Perhaps one day, you will be the one to whom I entrust my treasure.”

Roland shares his thoughts about the gold

Roland smiled. “Thank you, Faeron. I didn’t know a dragon could be so wise.”

Faeron smirked. “Strength lies in wisdom, Roland. Remember that. And may your heart always remain pure.”

Roland bowed and left the cave, leaving the dragon with his gold and secrets.

So, Roland returned to his kingdom, carrying with him not the gold, but the wisdom the dragon had shared with him. And Faeron stayed behind to guard his treasure, waiting for the day a worthy heart would come to him once more.
